While the original Kubrick Collection consisting of 7 video releases was approved by Kubrick to coincide with the US release of Eyes Wide Shut, this new boxed set of 9 videos has been produced posthumously. The changes: The videos have been remastered from new prints. All but Lolita and Dr. Strangelove have been remixed from Kubrick's mono soundtracks into Dolby 5.1 surround sound. Dr. Strangelove is the newer special edition release from Columbia Pictures described separately below. 2001 is a new transfer enhanced for 16x9 televisions and a new Dolby 5.1 remix of the film's original 6 track sound, but this edition deletes the Arthur C. Clarke Press conference found on the original release. The Shining video still includes Vivian Kubrick's documentary "Making The Shining," but a commentary track by Ms. Kubrick has been added. Titles are Lolita, Dr. Strangelove: Special Edition, 2001,  A Clockwork Orange, Barry Lyndon, The Shining, Full Metal Jacket. Additions to the boxed set are  Eyes Wide Shut, the same censored R rated version for North America (DVD region 1)  that had been released separately after the first boxed set appeared, and the new documentary Stanley Kubrick: A Life in Pictures.

A faithful adaptation of Arthur C. Clarke's sequel novel but this film, like that book, does not possess the same majesty or mind-bending properties of Kubrick's masterpiece.

Despite 30 years of relaxed censorship since Kubrick made his version, this film met with even more resistance upon its release. This Adrian Lynne directed film is much more serious that Kubrick's dark comedy. Between the two films there is a decent adaptation of Nabokov's novel.

After 17 years of complaining about Kubrick's adaptation this is what Stephen King came up with. Flame wars have erupted between King fans and Kubrick fans over which version is superior.

Trivia: Shot at the Stanley Hotel in Colorado, which served as King's inspiration for his fictitious Overlook Hotel. Notice the the real Stanley Hotel kitchen which was the inspiration for the much larger kitchen set in Kubrick's film.
