FILMS: Trainspotting - The decor on the wall in a bar is a copy of the Korova Milk Bar from A Clockwork Orange. Clueless - (Amy Heckerling writer-director). A black rectangular telephone is shot in close up at a low angle, making it resemble the 2001 monolith, as Also Sprach Zarathrusta plays on the soundtrack. Later, two characters watch Spartacus on TV. Twister - (Jan DeBont director) A drive in movie theatre plays The Shining. The credits show two characters are named Stanley and Kubrick though they are never referred to by name in the film. Speed - (Jan DeBont) A movie theatre is showing 2001. 2010 - A Time magazine cover uses photographs of Stanley Kubrick and Arthur C. Clarke to represent the Soviet premier and American president. All That Jazz - (Bob Fosse director/co-author) Film director played by Roy Scheider unhappy with the editing of his latest film says "Do you suppose Stanley Kubrick ever gets depressed?" 1941 - (Steven Spielberg director, Robert Zemeckis co-author) Slim Pickins names the contents of his pockets in a manner mimicking his reading of the survival kit contents in Dr. Strangelove. Back to the Future - (Robert Zemeckis director and co-author) Michael J. Fox uses a guitar amplifier with CRM 114 marked on it. CRM 114 is the name of the airplane radio in Dr. Strangelove. Sleeper - (Marshall Brickman co-author) First, Woody Allen's brain is reprogrammed a la Alex in A Clockwork Orange. Later Allen encounters a mellifluous voiced computer with a single green lens for an eye, similar to HAL in 2001. Manhattan - (Marshall Brickman co-author) Diane Keaton describes Michael Murphy's voice as very authoritative, like "the computer in 2001." Simon - (Marshall Brickman writer/director) Adam Arkin as Simon imitates the protohuman bone crushing scene in 2001. The Manhattan Project - (Marshall Brickman writer/director) Teenage boy refers to his mother's nuclear scientist boyfriend as "Dr. Strangelove." Vivement Dimanache! (Finally Sunday) - (Francois Truffaut) Main characters go to an art house movie theatre showing Paths of Glory. A theatre employee describes the film incorrectly as having as a romantic love story. Presumably a joke on Truffaut's part. Raising Arizona includes a restroom door with the letters POE, OPE marked on it, they being the recall code from Dr. Strangelove. Close Encounters of the Third Kind - (Steven Spielberg writer/director) The characters are drawn to touch the mysterious monolithic Devil's Tower shape in a fashion similar to the touching of the mysterious monolith in 2001. John Landis films- The director has worked the line "See you next Wednesday" into most if not all of his films. Perhaps a reference to the last line uttered by Frank Pool's parents in 2001. TV SERIES: The Odd Couple - Felix wants to subject Oscar to shock treatment conditioning, "just like A Clockwork Orange." The Bionic Woman - An episode features a HAL-like talking computer named "Alex." DeLarge? The Simpsons - Apparently an endless supply of references. For Halloween, Bart dresses like Alex in A Clockwork Orange. Homer experiences a Star Gate sequence as in 2001. Homer rides a bomb like Slim Pickens in Dr. Strangelove. A Strangelove like "war room" in a nuclear power plant, etc. So many more that there have even been web sites devoted just to Simpson's references to Kubrick. Tales From Crypt episode entitled "Yellow" - (Robert Zemeckis again) Elaborate homage to Kubrick stars Kirk Douglas in a Paths of Glory-like tale about a WWI soldier facing a firing squad for cowardice. Story even works in a trench filled with lime covered bodies as in Full Metal Jacket. MUSIC VIDEOS: "Lies" by The Thompson Twins - Contains hotel room and monolith as in 2001. "Believe" by Lenny Kravitz - Contains sets and costumes as in 2001. KUBRICK FILM REFERENCES WITHIN KUBRICK FILMS: Lolita - When asked his identity Quilty says, "No, I'm Spartacus. You come to free the slaves or something?" A Clockwork Orange - Soundtrack album of 2001 is prominently visible in a record shop scene. A Clockwork Orange - Alex is injected with "Serum 114." Apparently a reference to the CRM 114 radio in Dr. Strangelove. Barry Lyndon - A character refers to a painting by the artist Ludovico. Ludovico being the name of the conditioning treatment in A Clockwork Orange. Barry Lyndon - The narrator introduces the character played by Anthony Sharp as a "former government minister." Sharp had played the Minister of the Interior in Kubrick's previous film A Clockwork Orange. Full Metal Jacket - Unintentional but interesting. A burning black slab seen in the background during the sniper sequence is similar to the monolith in 2001. Eyes Wide Shut - Probably the most in any Kubrick film. The name Leon Vitali is seen in a newspaper article and the name Vitali also appears on a sign. Leon Vitali acted in Barry Lyndon and Eyes Wide Shut and was Kubrick's assistant for years. The name Bowman is also visible on a sign. Bowman was the name of an astronaut in 2001. One of Dr. Harford's patients is named Kaminski, which is the name of one of the hibernating astronauts in 2001. |
