Snacks, Appettizers and Drinks

Dag's Hot Dip

This is what became my mother's most popular snack both for the family and at Lockheed where she often brought goodies for her fellow workers.

A great snack found in my mother's collection (originally from The kitchen of Karen Born).

1 Clove Garlic - minced

Put all contents in large bowl. Seal and refrigerate. Marinade for at least 8 Hr.

Liver Paste (Leverpostej)

Mom loved Liver Paste as a snack on dark bread or crackers. This recipe found in her collection is very similar to those found in the my Danish cookbooks.
2 Cups Milk
1 Lb. Beef Liver, ground
1/2/ Lb. Bacon, ground
1 Medium sized Onion, ground
1 two-ounce tube Anchovy Paste
2 Eggs, Beaten
1/4 Cup Flour
1 Tsp. Salt
1/2 Tsp. Pepper
Mix all ingredients together thoroughly. Turn into greased loaf pan (10x5x3 In.). Place in pan of hot water. Bake in moderate oven (350F) for 1 1/2 hours. Serve hot or cold. Yield: 10 Portions.

Egg Nog

Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Years always included Egg Nog, except in my younger years I remember Tom and Jerry's to be a favorite also. This recipe has been reproduced exactly as found in Mom's book even though the amount of whiskey seems excessive for such a rich drink (but I can remember a time I would not have thought so).

6 Eggs
3/4 Cup Sugar
1 Pt. Heavy Cream
1 Pt. Milk
          Nutmeg
1 Pt. Whiskey ( Optional )
1 Oz. Jamaica Rum ( " )
Beat egg yolks and whites separately. Add 1/2 cup Sugar to Yolks and 1/4 cup sugar to stiffly beaten whites. Mix yolks and whites; stir in milk and cream. Stir Thoroughly, adding whiskey and rum if desired, and serve with a dash of nutmeg in each cup.
