What You See Is What You Get
HTML Editors
Netscape
Composer v.7.1 - or Mozilla Composer - A component
of Communicator,
Composer is extremely easy to use, highly functional and accurate in
generating
basic standard code. The user interface provides graphical, word
processor
style point and click editing plus insertion of raw code via dialog
boxes.
I write almost all my pages and edit them online in Composer. - FREE
Macromedia Dreamweaver MX 2004 - Expensive
Hotdog
-
Especially nice for folks learning to author webpages.
AOL
Press -
I have used this free editor to rough out frame sets from scratch. The
graphical
interface is very nice for this function. You may or may not find it
convenient
for other wysiwyg editing. - FREE
Frontpage
Express - ugh! - Not for me, but probably ok for
Microsoft
devotees.
Encourages use of methods that are proprietary and/or require server
compliance.
As far as I could find, it makes no clear distinction between what is
standard
and what is proprietary, nor between what requires server compliance
and what
doesn't. This in my view can make use hazardous for the novice author. - FREE

HTML Text Editors
NoteTab -
Absolutely
Super for all text, including HTML, writers. When you need a text
function,
look to NoteTab first. This is my second most used program for
maintaining
web pages.
UltraEdit-32
- Text Editor -- HEX Editor -- HTML Editor -- Programmers Editor --- A
"must have" tool for Windows users.
PFE (Programmers File
Editor) - FREE Static versions available
for Win 3.1, Win95, WinNT, Win2000 -- Currently not available on the www

Automated Code Wizard Editors
I've tried these, but I don't use them as much as others, but
I go
to them more than I
used to. Some of my best friends swear by their favorite of them.
1st Page 2000 - Top
of the line
FREE. May be a little complicated for beginners.
Here is a review of 1st Page 2000
**** NOTE
there are many reports of virus or trojan infections in 1st Page 2000.
This is due to FALSE positive results with several antiVirus programs (note added 03/18/04 07:37 pm)....
Quanta Plus
- A web development tool for the K Desktop Environment. Quanta is
designed for quick web development and is rapidly becoming a mature
editor with a number of great features. added - 04/01/04 02:33 pm - FREE
EZpad 3.0 Official HomePage -
Very
neat, but sadly v.3 is a memory hog. V.4 is
in the works and will hopefully solve the problem. FREE - belongs in
your
arsenal.
CoffeeCup
-
HomeSite- Top
of the line not free... Used by many Pros.
Arachnophilia -
