Penn Valley Community College
Emergency Medical Technician - Paramedic Program
One of the Metropolitan
Community Colleges
1998-1999 EMT-Paramedic Class
Truman Campus
Introduction
Since the 1950s, the need for quality pre-hospital care of the critically ill and injured has been recognized and as a result, standardized levels of emergency medical education & pre-hospital health care delivery have been developed through the United States Department of Transportation.
At the basic level, the Emergency Medical Technician-Basic is able to provide basic life support and safe transportation for the trauma victim and the medically ill patient. At the advanced level, the EMT-Paramedic is able to offer critically ill or injured patients pharmacological & intravenous fluid therapies as well as advanced cardiac & trauma life support.
In an effort to provide these levels of emergency medical education, the Division of Life Sciences at Penn Valley Community College has developed the EMT-Paramedic Program at its Pioneer and Truman campuses. The program is quite flexible in that there are several options available, depending on the degree of certification the student wishes to achieve.
Prerequisites for General College Admission

General prerequisites for admission to the college include a high school diploma or equivalent and the student must be 18 years of age by completion of the Emergency Medical Technician-Basic course. New students will need to complete a general application for admission to Penn Valley Community College and have all high school, GED, and college records forwarded to the Records Office. Once admission has been obtained to the college, the student will then need to apply directly to the EMT-Paramedic Program for admission. Applications to the Paramedic Program can also be submitted using our online application form.
(Please note: EMTP 150 EMT-Basic does not require a
separate application process.)
Emergency Medical Technician - Basic Course
The EMT-Basic course is one semester in length. Courses are generally offered each semester, with classes available in the morning, afternoon and evening. Summer classes are also available.
The EMT-Basic course consists of 8 credit hours of instruction that includes:
The course exceeds the requirements for EMT-Basic education as outlined by the Missouri Bureau of Emergency Medical Services and the United States Department of Transportion's National Standard Curriculum.
Upon successful completion of the course, the student is then eligible to sit for the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians examination for the EMT-Basic. Once this examination is successfully completed, the student may then apply for Missouri licensure as an Emergency Medical Technician-Basic.
Emergency Medical Technician - Paramedic Program
The EMT-Paramedic program is available to prospective students as either a Certificate Program, or students may pursue an Associate of Applied Science Degree. The Associate Degree Program includes all of the courses required for Missouri EMT-Paramedic Certification, as well as a general studies curriculum. The degree program and the certificate program are outlined later in this web site.
The core EMT-Paramedic program consists of 38 credit hours of instruction which includes:
The EMT-Paramedic program at Penn Valley Community College utilizes a selective admissions process. Prospective students will be considered for application based on the following criteria:
All prospective students must either hold current EMT-Basic Certification or be in the process of completing the certification requirements.

Field Experience
