INTRODUCTION

The guidelines listed below are intended to introduce the student to the procedures of the EMT-Basic course at Penn Valley Community College. Outlined below are guidelines for student requirements, dress, documentation, and scheduling, and grading. These guidelines are not intended to replace the Metropolitan Community Colleges policies and procedures as they pertain to student conduct, only to augment those policies and procedures as they pertain to the classes of the EMT-Paramedic program.

ATTENDANCE

Attendance of all class sessions is mandatory. Roll will be taken each class session to record the each students attendance. Students who miss four (4) class sessions for any reason may be dropped from the course at the discretion of the primary instructor.

Further, it is expected that each student will be on time for each class session. To prevent disruption of the class, students who arrive more than ten (10) minutes late shall not be admitted to the class until the first break period. These student will, however, responsible for any and all material presented during the portion of the class which was missed.

DRESS STANDARDS

Professionalism shall be maintained at all times while attending class or clinicals. As such students are expected to dress appropriately for class and clinical sessions.

Classroom Attire

1. Beards and longer hairstyles are acceptable as long as these are kept neat, and trimmed. For safety reasons it may be necessary to tie long hair back into a pony tail.

2. Students will need to supply their own stethoscopes in order to comply with infection control standards.

3. Those students not adhering to these standards shall not be allow to attend class sessions, and shall be counted absent for that session.

Clinical Attire

Students participating in clinical rotations will STRICTLY adhere to the following standards of dress:

1. Light blue oxford style shirt. No patches or insignia shall be affixed to the shirt.

2. Navy blue trousers. Corduroy and denim are not acceptable.

3. Black polishable leather shoes.

4. Black polishable leather belt.

5. PVCC EMT-Paramedic program approved name tag.

6. No long necklaces, or dangling earrings.

8. Students will need to supply their own stethoscopes in order to comply with various hospitals and ambulance services infection control standards.

9. Dark color winter jacket. No patches or insignia shall be affixed to the jacket.

Special consideration for hospital clinicals.

1. White blazer length lab coat. No patches or insignia shall be affixed to the lab coat.

2. Navy blue dress slacks. Flight, fatigue, or cargo style pants are not acceptable.

GRADING GUIDELINES

The following shall be the grading guidelines for EMT-Basic 
Class.  These guidelines shall be adhered to without exception.


                          Grading Scale

                        90.00  - 100.00   A
                        80.00  -  89.99   B
                        70.00  -  79.99   C
                         0.00  -  69.99   F


Students shall be graded based on the following criteria:

                  1. Unit Examinations - 60% of Final Grade.
                     Make up exams will be given only if the
                     student has an excused absence, and only
                     one make up exam will be given per student.
                     All make up examinations will be administered
                     on the last day of class unless otherwise
                     announced by the primary instructor.

                  2. Quizzes / Homework - 20% of Final Grade. 
                     The student shall be quizzed from time
                     to time on material either cover during
                     class, found in the text, or other reading
                     assignments.  Quizzes shall be both announced
                     and unannounced.  No make up quizzes shall be 
                     given.  The student may also be given homework
                     assignments to assist in the assimilation
                     of lecture materials.  Late assignments will
                     not be accepted.

                  3. Final Examination - 20% of Final Grade.

Clinical Rotations

Each student is required to complete both ambulance and hospital clinical rotations in order to successfully complete this course. Student are expected to be prompt for clinical rotations and to follow the policies and procedures at each clinical site.

Students are required to have 12 hours of ambulance clinical time and 12 hours of hospital emergency room clinical time by the completion of the course.

CONCLUSION

The purpose of the EMT-Basic class is to provide the student with the opportunity to develop didactic and practical skills as well as to develop the students' ability to communicate with patients, family members and other medical personnel. To develop these skills it is vital that the student attend each of the class session and all clinical rotations that are scheduled. Further, it is the purpose of the EMT-Basic class to instill an attitude of professionalism in the student.

Also, please remember that the various hospitals and ambulance services wish to provide you with the best possible clinical experience. These organizations have chosen to donate their time, skills and staff members in order to enrich the clinical experience of each student.

It is the hope of the EMT-Paramedic program that your clinical and classroom experience will be an enjoyable as well as educational one.
