Our Home School

We initially began homeschooling in 1995 due to moving twice in one year (yes, we are a military family -- always on the go). We have really enjoyed it! Along the way we have discovered many benefits to homeschooling. It gives our children continuity in their schooling as well as a lot of flexibility to travel around dad's ever-changing submarine deployment schedule. Many people homeschool for religious or other reasons. There are probably as many reasons to homeschool as there are homeschoolers!
This year we are using the Prairie Primer. It is a unit study approach and is based on the Little House on the Prairie books. There are nine books in the series, and we will cover roughly one book per month. We will be supplementing with McGuffey's Readers, Ray's Arithmetic, and Harvey's Grammars. We also will be using various computer programs, such as The Oregon Trail to supplement history and geography. The girls are very excited to be using this curriculum!
If you are interested in homeschooling, be sure to check out the Homeschooling Resource Center and/or the Homeschool Legal Defense Association (the HSLDA website has the current homeschool laws summarized for each state, as well as state-by-state homeschool support group information). One of the best places to find homeschooling supplies is Great Christian Books. There you will find just about anything you could ever need, and they have great prices.
One of my favorite places to hang out is the Education Bulletin Board on the Prodigy online service. The people there are very helpful and friendly. They have an answer for just about any question you could ever ask.

PRIORITIES
In a hundred years from now,
it will not matter how much money was in my bank account,
the kind of house I lived in, or the kind of car I drove,
ONLY that I improved tomorrow by
making a difference in the life of a CHILD!
