THE POLSON-CHENEY FAMILY
Additional Information
Lester Omer Bissett:
Notes:
Lester first attended the Manzanita School near the Bissett homestead on the Sugar pine Stage Road through 7th grade. He then went to the University Grammer School in Easton. Lester graduated from Fresno High School.
After High School, Lester helped build a store for his parents at Yosemite Forks, and had several contract jobs. During the winter of 1939-1940, Lester worked on a survey party on the Shasta Dam Project. At that time, the Bissetts were living in Redding where their son, Roy, was born.
After returning to Oakhurst from Redding, Lester's life long dream of raising cattle began to be realized. At first, cattle were pastured on the home ranch and on leased land in Oakhurst, Green Mt and O'Connor's (now Yosemite West). Later, operations expanded and cattle ranged on a USFS permit at Mt Raymond, and pastures were added at Bailey Flat and Oakvale. In 1975, Lester, Elizabeth and her father F.F. Wilson moved to Mariposa, the center of their cattle holdings. In 1987, there were cattle on Iron Creek/ Mt Raymond, Fort Bidwell, Chowchilla and the home ranch on Ben Hur Road.
In 1986, Lester was chosen Madera County Cattleman of the Year. Lester served as a director on the Merced Board of ASC, and a director of the Board of the Madera County Cattlemen's Association of California. Lester is a member of the Sierra Masonic Lodge No 788 Oakhurst.
