Anna Eleanor "Eleanor" Roosevelt:
Notes:
Eleanor lived with her maternal grandmother after the death of her parents. She was sent to boarding school in England when she was 15. Upon her return, Eleanor did social work in New York until she married Franklin. They were married in New York City with Eleanor's cousin President Theodore Roosevelt in attendance.
Franklin had an affair with Lucy Page Mercer, Eleanor's social secretary, in 1918. This was a turning point in their marriage, although the couple reconciled, Eleanor decided she needed a career of her own. She became involved in the League of Women Voters and Women's Trade Union League. In 1921, Eleanor became active on Democratic party politics on behalf of Franklin who had polio.
When Franklin became president in 1932, Eleanor continued to work behind the scenes. She worked for coal miners and youth during the Great Depression. Eleanor worked for racial equality, and resigned from the Daughters of the American Revolution when they would not allow Marian Anderson, a Black singer, use their facilities for a concert.
After Franklin's death, Eleanor founded the Americans for Democratic Action, a liberal group within the Democratic Party. From 1945-1953, Eleanor was the U.S. delegate to the United Nations. She chaired the commission that drafted the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. (From the Encarta98 Encyclopedia)
