Sara was 26 years younger than her husband. Her family had prospered in the China trade, and she brought a considerable fortune to her marriage.

Sara supervised Franklin's education until he was fourteen. She tried to dominate Franklin throughout her life. She opposed Franklin's marriage to Eleanor and was the chief problem of the young couple's wedded life.
