John moved with his family to Canada from Wales when he was 14 years old.

When John was 24, he started his trip to the United States, He arrived in Illinois in 1840. While doing carpentry work for Jonathan Cheney, he met his future wife, Katherine. They started a farm and entered it in 1842.

The 1850 census for Cheney's Grove reported that John was 30 and born in Wales. He was a farmer with real estate valued at $2,000. His wife Catherine was 25 and born in Ohio. John had two children in 1850 Elliott L. 2, and Francis aged 2 months. They were both born in Illinois.

In 1857, John moved to Bloomington.

John was living in the Township of Cheney's Grove according to the 1859-1860 Cheney's Grove Directory. (From "Gleanings from the Heart of the Cornbelt", The McLean County Genealogical Society. Winter 2000, Vol 34, No 4, page 149.)

In 1873, John bought a farm north of Saybrook, and a house in Saybrook where he lived.
