"William Elliott Dead
A Well Known Pioneer Contractor Pays Natures Debt"
William Elliott Sr., the well known levee contractor, died Sunday evening at the home of his son near Gridley.
The deceased was a former resident of Marysville, and was well known in this northern section of the country. He was a native of County Tipperary, Ireland and was 68 years of age.
Up to the last few years, he performed most of the levee work in this district, and at the time the cut-off on the Yuba River was constructed, he handled a heavy sub-contract.
The deceased was married twice, and was the father of 10 children. The announcement of his death will not cause surprise as he had been on the sick list for the past two years." (From the "Marysville Semi-Weekly Appeal" Thursday, 28 July 1898"
