Art attended the University of California at Berkeley.
Art was the first licensed aircraft mechanic in the United States. During World War II, Art worked on military planes for Lockheed Aircraft in Los Angeles, California. Betty Cheney Polson remembers spending her weekends at Art's apartment while attending USC.
After the War, Art returned to Coalinga to help his father with Cheney Bros. He took over Cheney Bros on the death of his father. Art ran Cheney Bros for 26 years.
Art met Rose at his favorite breakfast diner where Rose was waitressing. They lived together for awhile in the guest house on the Cheney property. Annie finally put her foot down, and told Art to either marry Rose or break up. They married.

Rose grew up in Fresno. She was of Russian-German descendant, and spoke German.
Rose was a fabulous cook. She will always be remembered for her German chocolate potato cake.
