Additional Information

Henderson Polson:

Notes:
Henderson and Sarah spent their early married life in Iowa where their ten children were born. Henderson was a farmer and a traveling preacher (self-proclaimed). In 1871, Henderson, Sarah, and their 10 children left Iowa to search for a better livelihood in Kansas. They traveled in three covered wagons, trailing their livestock. They settled near Neodesha where they again farmed and Henderson traveled from town to town preaching.

Around 1882, the Polsons moved to Chautauqua County. At different times, they had a grocery store in Cedar Vale, a country store near Elgin, and for several years operated the mill at Hart's mill near Hewins.

Henderson was a tall raw-boned fellow with one glass eye. He was known to frighten his grandchildren by removing the eye and placing it on his finger. (From the "History of Chautauqua County, Kansas", 1987, page 618).

On Tuesday morning June 6, 1905 at 9 A.M., Henderson Polson died very suddenly at the home of Mr and Mrs Crank in Cedar Vale. Earlier in the morning, Henderson ate a hearty breakfast, came up to town and after chatting with friends for a few minutes, went down to the Crank home which he owned, and worked for a few minutes on some shrubbery in the yard. Presently he went into the house and seating himself in an easy chair, remarked in a joking way to Mrs Crank that he was tired and that he was getting too old to work.

After chatting a little, Mrs Crank left the room and returning in about 10 minutes, found Mr Polson sitting in his chair just as if he had dropped off to sleep but the spark of life had fled. (From the "Cedar Vale Commercial" Friday, June 9, 1905, p5, c 2).

Sarah Emaline Bates:

Notes:
Mrs Polson lived a life of usefulness, was industrious, and a constant helpmate to her faithful husband. For a number of years toward the end of her life, she was in very poor health.

Mrs Polson leaves 44 living grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren, many of whom were present for the funeral. (From the "Cedar Vale Commercial" Vol III, February 7, 1902).
