INTRODUCTION AND PHILOSOPHY OF RESTRUCTURING AT CHRISTA McAULIFFE ELEMENTARY SCHOOL

The "Blue Print Two Thousand" is a part of the work at our local schools. It calls for local responsibility to insure that our schools have a plan and then "work the plan" in order to seek better educational results in our schools. Improvement of our local educational system is the focus of this effort but again it boils down to the input of the teachers, students, administration, parents, business leaders and all community citizens.

School improvement has a history of events which has caused our elected officials to revisit the process of education. Our understanding is to look at the need for school improvement, understand documents relating to school improvement and identify roles and responsibilities of parent and community in the school improvement process.

Why change is needed in education is a valid question to ask and one which needs to be addressed. Our schools are faced with unprecedented challenges in several volatile areas. At a time when our entire society is struggling to cope with massive technologic change, worldwide political upheaval and a diverse array of pressure from so many forces is reshaping the core of society and the measure for success in the next generation will be how well our students of today will perform in a changing society.

To address what this new restructuring in our schools is all about is to see that local communities need to take an interest in protecting our national treasure - Our Young People. Many studies have been done on what to do with educating our young and the focus is that a team concept of involvement on the local level is best. This means that our schools become accountable to a plan approved by the local school board and structured with the partnership of the local area. Each school is able to write their own plan to achieve a very different emphasis. differences at schools is expected as different improvement are addressed. What is important to note in this restructuring is the great emphasis which is placed on trying to involve the community at large to get involved with the local school. Each school has a permanent restructuring team. This school improvement team is made up of teachers, parents, and community residents and the Special Teams of this School Improvement Team (SIT) is made up of teachers, parents and interested resident to help address school improvements. Petitions to the local school board are made for variances to regular practices and changes of budgeted money are requested.

Christa McAuliffe School has been from the start a leader in helping to facilitate this team challenge in our community. Your support and active participation is what is sought after in this new process. Your involvement can mean to try and keep informed with what is being done and willing to help when asked. You can apply to serve on the School Improvement Team (SIT) and \ or become a Special Team member of the SIT.

Collaborative effort has been made from several groups to get Christa McAuliffe Elementary School where it is today. The School Improvement Team component has been working since September of 1991 at Christa McAuliffe School. Over the years an education process for SIT members has occurred as to the Federal Guideline, State Law, and County School Board policies regarding school restructuring for improvement. A distinct style of facilitative leadership as arisen with the McAuliffee School Improvement Team (SIT) which emphasizes consensus building among its members. The work of this team is to set direction for the school in the years to come as well as to evaluate where the school has been. Constant assessing of our needs to determine areas of improvement is how our GOALS are determined. It is the viewpoint of the School Improvement Team that we will always be in a state of "becoming" and new horizons will always be before us to explore and understand.

The desire of the Team is that all interested people and new members become familiar with what the School Improvement Plan (SIP) is about. Improvement in education is a never ending process for all new members to learn and by being involved new members can grow and add their talents to the team. It is with great joy that new members are welcomed as they take their place in this task. We do see that along with dedicated teachers, staff, parents, and community we can begin to address our educational problems from a positive "can do attitude".
