God bless Frank.
While Mozart stands head and shoulders above all other
musical geniuses who left their mark in the last few centuries,
I'm convinced that Frank Zappa will be remembered as the
greatest musical genius of the 20th century. There was no one
more prolific, no one who absorbed more influences, no one with
the imagination and creativity, and no one who had the strength
of character that this man had. God, I'll miss him.
Music under Soviet Rule

I've been enjoying a lot of Russian music lately, and recommend
that you visit Music under Soviet
rule, a terrific resource for exploring music of this
century (and a five-star website). Shostakovich,
Prokofiev, Schnittke - there are rich fields to be mined in
this area. Rimsky-Korsakov and his contemporaries also
left some priceless gems. Recent contributions of
Kancheli and Gubaidulina explore the edges of the
modern fringe.
Beatown - an XTC web site

Bless you, bless you all of you pretty girls... The
recent compilation tribute album "A Testimonial Dinner"
features artists such as Kate Mclachlin, Crash Test Dummies
& They Might Be Giants covering XTC gems. Rueben
Blades contributes "The Man Who Sailed Around His Soul".
One cut has the honored Swindon roastees sporting the moniker
"Terry & the Lovemen" with a studio remake of one of their own
tunes. Visit Beatown - an
excellent XTC web site and find out all you need to know about
this band. (Takes a long time to load; lotta graphics.)
Our featured album for the second month in a row.... The Smashing Pumpkins

I had the opportunity to really listen to this in the car
fighting traffic from Oakland to Napa at Thanksgiving. It's really hot.
This is the best new band I've heard in the past couple of years.
There's certainly no shortage of sites idolizing Billy
Corgan & company. Check out Eric Agnew's
Smashing Pumpkins Site., maybe the generic The Smashing
Pumpkins site, or try The Pumpkin Garden When searching
any topic, Yahoo is a
pretty good place gather the latest crop of pumpkin pages, or
anything else.
Internet Underground Music Archive

A lot to explore at this web site. They even have some
Captain Beefheart MPEG and sound clips. I can't say that I have
a lot of knowledge or interest in the music they seem to cover,
but the interface and graphics are kinda nice. Click on the lizard
for a menu.
This information source on ambient & house music and peripheral topics
(which are of peripheral interest to me) has a really cool graphic from Tikal. Click on it to enter the periphery.
