Section 2 through section 9 present family information in Register format. Sections 2 through 7 contain information on the descendants of an individual Bethell/Bethel. Sections 8 & 9 list multiple Bethel families which have not been linked to an ancestor in one of the other sections. The appendix includes vital statistics, military (Revolution through Civil War) lists and other data from the 1976 book.

We have found Bethel/Bethell spelled both ways. The last "l" was often dropped by some members of the family and retained by other children of the same parents. Some individuals have the name spelled with two "l"s on some records and one "l" in others. We agree with Sible Floyd Bethel that the spelling doesn't matter.

Most of the early Bethells were first in Virginia, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and North Carolina, however, James Mills Bethel the son of John Bethel was b. 1807, Antwerp, Jefferson County, New York. After the Revolution, Bethells went West into Kentucky, Ohio, Tennessee, Illinois, Arkansas, Mississippi and took part in the California "Gold Rush," a town in Alaska is named for a Bethel.

Following this text is a copy of the table of contents to help give an idea of the what is in this book. The index runs from page 585 thru 685, containing over 17,000 names. Bethel starts on page 590, Bethell on page 600 and ends on page 605. The other 85 pages of the index list Bethel relatives with other surnames, the index also lists others in the text who were involved in transactions with Bethells. The book also contains many stories, wills and biographical material in addition to the standard line of descent, birth, marriage and death information.

Total page count in the book is 704, (8 1/2" x 11,") pages (including about 8 blank pages). It's printed on 60# acid free paper, smyth sewn, hardbound in a blue cloth with silver lettering on the front and spine. Heart of the Lakes Publishing, Interlaken, New York, handled the production. The price of the book is $56.00 each + $5.00 for shipping = $61.00. The shipping cost for additional books (after the 1st shipped at $5.00) shipped in the same order to one address, will only be an additional $1.00 per book.

In the last few years many of you may have received a notice for a "Bethel" genealogy which contained your name. These are mass produced via database address lists with a bit of general "how to" genealogy added. They are produced for a quick profit and do not include the extensive research, family links and compilation that goes into a good genealogy. Genealogy is a hobby for Carol and I (sometimes it consumes too much time) we are both heavily involved with the Ulster County (NY) Genealogical Society. Carol is a past Secretary and at present one of the Directors of the Society and I am currently the President. The point is that this book is not profit driven but the result of a desire to increase the knowledge of our families for future generations.
