Proposals:
1. Reshaping Public Schools. Our children need more individual attention. Studies show that urban children learn much better in class sizes below twenty. We will cut class size in half to provide the type of personal attention our children need, and the environment our teachers need to support greater discipline. Studies show that class size is an extremely important factor in inner city learning. (We were the first mayoral candidates to suggest we cut, not raise, class size.) Additionally, we will create special counselors whose only job is to teach parents how to get involved in their children's education. Finally, we would place adult supervised, after-school recreation on school grounds, so that the children can go directly from their last class, to supervised arts and recreation, until 6 p.m., when a parent may be home from work. Price Tag: $200 million per year.
2. Renter's Maintenance insurance. About 80% of renters are one paycheck away from homelessness, with inadequate savings plans. We would institute a programwecall "Renter's Maintenance Insurance", which would operate similar to unemployment insurance. It would take a small percentage of each month's rent (3.5%) and put it into a pool. It the renter is later unexpectedly laid off or otherwise unable to work, the Renter's Maintenance Insurance will pay her rent for six crucial months, while she looks for new employment, or otherwise gets past the current crisis. To assure that it is not abused, one would only be eligible for six months benefits every two years.
3. Proportional Health Benefits. Many employers utilize a despicable practice of hiring employees on a part-time basis just to avoid paying health benefits. We will work to pass legislation to close the part-time employee loophole on health benefits, with a mandated, pro rata payment. Employers who contribute "x" dollars to full-time employees' health insurance will be forced to contribute 75% of "x" to an employee who works 30 hours a week.

Some Things We Stand For:
1. Making a high quality public education available and affordable to all.
2. An economic policy that invests first and foremost in human beings.
3. Emphasizing youth intervention programs, training, recreation facilities, and drug treatment, as opposed to more prisons.
4. Programs designed to turn every District renter into an owner of their house or apartment over the next ten years.
5. Protection of rent control from its continual assaults from the status quo.
6. A budget that is fair and just in its treatment of all citizens, including those in need of assistance.
7. A freeze on all government privatization plans, and government asset giveaways.
8. The right of full-time employees to earn a living wage, and to negotiate, contract and strike, if necessary, over their work environment and benefits.
9. Curbing the growth of aids, cancer and infant mortality in DC by improving access to quality health care, especially to the poor and children.
