Help! My HP48 Locked Up!

Most programs that you will find for the HP48 are dependable, and have been thorougly tested by it's programmer. However, at times, you will run into problems. Some files can be corrupted when downloaded, while some simply cause conflicts with other programs that you have previously loaded. Often, programs will be compatible with the GX and not the G series because of the G's smaller memory size. Also, there are programs which are compatible with the older HP48S series, but have problems on the HP48G/X series and vice versa.

What do I do if my HP locks up?
If your HP locks up, don't panic. I know it is difficult to keep the dollar signs from appearing in front of your eyes, but all is not lost (-probably just some or all of your data).

1. Try pressing the CANCEL button. If this fails, go to step #2.

2. Try a system halt. This requires a metal object such as a paperclip. Remove the upper right rubber foot on the backside of the calculator. It has a small hole with a "R" beside it. Insert the paperclip, allowing it to bottom out for one second. Now, press the "ON" button. If this fails, go to step #3.

3. Try doing a memory reset- recovering memory. Do this by holding the ON key, A, and F keys simultaneously. Then release the A and F keys, while holding the ON key. Now, release the ON key. The calculator will now beep and display a message:"Try To Recover Memory?" Answer YES to try to recover the memory. If all the above fails, as a last resort, go to step #4.

4. Try doing a memory reset- without recovering memory. Do this by holding the ON key, A, and F keys simultaneously. Then release the A and F keys, while holding the ON key. Now, release the ON key. The calculator will now beep and display a message:"Try To Recover Memory?" Answer NO to not recover the memory. This will result in a loss of all of your data and will restore the HP48 to its default settings.
